Looking for Dog-Friendly Walks in New Zealand?

"Where can I take my dog for an awesome walk?"

It's one of the most common questions dog owners ask. The good news is you don't have to spend hours searching dozens of websites. There are some fantastic resources already available, and our favourite is Hiking Dogs New Zealand.

Our Favourite Dog Walking Resource

Hiking Dogs NZ has built one of the most comprehensive dog-friendly outdoor resources in New Zealand. Their interactive map makes it easy to discover walks all over the country, while also highlighting dog-friendly accommodation, cafés and pubs, community dog parks, and other great places to visit with your best mate. It's an invaluable resource for anyone who loves getting outdoors with their dog.

What we especially like is that the website is dedicated entirely to hiking and walking with dogs and it includes every bylaw and beach sign with evidence and source information. So no more guesswork. Lead on, lead off, or no dogs allowed. Walk by walk, rule by rule.

One thing they note and we also want to highlight - none of the information online outranks what is in front of you: a sign at the gate, a rāhui, a closure or a ranger beats this site every time.

And of course, be respectful of other people enjoying the outdoors. Slow down when passing walkers, keep your dog under effective control, and always clean up after them. If you see another dog on a lead, it's a thoughtful gesture to put your own dog on a lead too—even in areas where dogs are allowed off lead. Some dogs may be young and still learning good manners, while others may be anxious, recovering from an injury or simply more comfortable with a little extra space. A moment of consideration helps ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience on the trail.

So if you're looking for a short local walk, a beach adventure, a more challenging day hike, or just a coffee and puppuccino, their growing database is a fantastic place to start planning your next outing. It's simple to browse, easy to search, and full of inspiration for getting outdoors together.

Gear for an awesome walk with your dog

A little preparation and the right kit can make every walk more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

Here are some essentials we recommend taking include:

  • A comfortable lead or hands-free waist lead should always be on you
  • Fresh drinking water and a collapsible bowl (important if there is no reliable or safe drinking water on your walk)
  • Dog waste bags (and a bag or 'loop' to carry them out with)
  • Treats for rest stops (a pouch to carry treats and other accessories can be helpful too)
  • A harness if your dog is hiking over longer distances.
  • A towel for wet fur and muddy paws before the drive home
  • Depending on your adventure, you might also consider carrying first aid items and a comb to brush out seeds from your dogs fur, so you are not transporting them between zones or areas
